IBRAHIM BADAMASI BABANGIDA UNIVERSITY LAPAI

Institute of maritime studies

Introduction

The Institute of Maritime Studies (IMS), Lapai is an institute of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU) established in September 2013. Its establishment was based on the approval of the National Assembly in 2012 under the auspices of the Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (N1MASA) which provided the institute the necessary facility and funding for its sound foundation, take-off and sustainability.
Niger State has the longest inland waterway in” Nigeria with the main River Niger feeding the Delta region and coastal areas, which constitute the major maritime area of the country. Given its central location in Nigeria, Niger State is poised to become the hub for Inland Waterway Port and Maritime activities while serving the socio-economic needs of the Northern hinterland of the country.
It is also important to note that IBBU is the only tertiary institution closest to the proposed Inland Port at Baro in Niger State; giving the university the most strategic location advantage for housing any form of capacity development and professional training programmes of inland waterway maritime studies in Nigeria. In pursuance of this goal, the institute has designed academic and professional programmes tailored to meet the yearning capacity gap in the maritime industry.

Mandate

The mandate of the institute of maritime studies, Lapai is to contribute to the production of high quality future national and global maritime professionals through maritime education training and research.
